Rop reasons to choose a Selous luxury safari

Vast wilderness sanctuary

The Selous game reserve is one of the world’s largest remaining wilderness areas. At around 50 000 kilometer square, this pristine safari destination is three times the size of the Serengeti.

Undisturbed game viewing

The Selous game reserve is slightly off the beaten track, and especially in its western parts there are very limited accommodation and no crowds. Game sightings are often private, only visited by one vehicle.

Very good chance of seeing African wild dogs

These beautiful endangered animals are fast disappearing from the rest of Africa, but they thrive in the Selous game reserve. Over 30 percent of the continent’s wild dog population occur here.

Large animals in large numbers

A safari in Selous game reserve offers spectacular big game sightings, including the Big Five. Huge herds of buffalo and elephant roam the savanna. River sand banks are lined with crocodiles, and abundant grunting hippos wander in and out of the water. Magnificent close up encounters with lion and leopard are to be had.  The reserve is also home to great numbers of giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, bushbuck, eland and greater kudu to name but a few.

Variety of activities - game drives, foot safaris, boating safaris, fishing, birding, bush dining

Selous game drives in open 4x4 vehicles are varied and exciting and each time a new area can be discovered. The terrain is wild and rugged with roads that are usually no more than rocky paths or dusty tracks, and you will often follow animal tracks off road in the bush. River safaris are possible when the water level is high enough and these offer an interesting different perspective on the wildlife. The flat landscape of the Selous game reserve lends itself to relaxed walking safaris during which nature can be studied on a more intimate level. Bird life is abundant and varied especially along the river banks, and a few hours of birding can be very rewarding. You may want to try your hand at fishing – the Great Ruaha river is home to many species, including tiger fish. Bush meals and picnics add extra flavor to your safari in the Selous game reserve.

UNESCO world heritage site

Selous game reserve is inscribed as one of the Tanzania World Heritage sites for its high density and diversity of species. The reserve is relatively undisturbed by human impact with an abundance of both predators and prey. In 2014, UNESCO unfortunately had to add the Selous game reserve to the List of World Heritage in Danger, due to the decline in black rhinoceros numbers.

Tanzania southern safari circuit

Selous game reserve is situated in southern Tanzania, where safaris have their own gentle and relaxed pace, in a raw and authentic environment. Less frequented than the national parks in the north, the southern parks provide a sense of real African adventure. They are enormous with some of the highest concentrations of animals anywhere in Africa and a spectacular diversity of wildlife.

Make a difference in an African community - book a Selous luxury safari

Your luxury safari trip to Selous will make a difference in the daily lives of African communities. Our preferred Selous safari accommodation - Azura Selous -  is not only luxurious, but also supports local initiatives and community projects, such as Women Craft whose unique and functional handmade pieces decorate the camp. Furthermore, Azura applies a firm policy of community upliftment, which means most of the staff are Tanzanian. Typically they have grown up in disadvantaged communities with poor education, and are being trained by Azura. By staying at Azura Selous, you are helping them to advance their skills.

Support conservation efforts in Selous game reserve

Due to almost unchecked poaching in the 1980’s, black rhinoceros all but disappeared from the Selous game reserve. An ongoing project is trying to nurture the black rhino population in the reserve back to health, and is having some success in those parts of the Selous game reserve that are dedicated to photographic tourism.

Best time of year for a Selous luxury safari

Selous has a lovely warm and temperate climate throughout the year, with average day temperatures ranging from 30 to 32˚C (84 to 90˚F) and average night temperatures ranging from 20 to 24˚C (68 to 75˚F). The dry season usually begins in June, and runs into November when short and light rain showers start occurring. Rain showers gradually become heavier, and some lodges close in April and May during the wettest period. The hottest time of the year is January through March, but during this period rain showers bring relief and it is an excellent season for photography with beautiful light and a lush green back drop.
